Dear University of Alberta Community,

September is my favourite time of year as we welcome new and returning students, faculty and staff. Across our five vibrant campuses, the energy and excitement are palpable as we prepare to embark on another year of learning, discovery and growth. This year, we welcome a record 45,000 students who will experience the excellence in research and education that makes the University of Alberta one of Canada’s top universities.

Welcome activities have already begun. An enthusiastic team of staff, students and volunteers greeted our new cohort of learners as they moved into the university’s residences, and Monday’s Kick-Off Event in the Main Quad launched a busy Week of Welcome.

To our students: This is your time. Whether it's your first or final year at the U of A, seize every opportunity the university and our dynamic community have to offer. Expand your horizons by joining a club, a sports team or an academic society. Try something new, explore different perspectives and push the boundaries of your comfort zone. Build (or rekindle) valuable friendships and create a support system and network to help you achieve your goals and enhance your university experience.

You will learn from professors committed to delivering an outstanding education, both in the classroom and the lab. You will collaborate and debate ideas as you seek solutions to the world’s greatest challenges.

To our dedicated faculty and staff: I am deeply grateful for your unwavering commitment to fostering an exceptional learning and research environment. Your passion and dedication are the foundation of our students' success and the university's continued excellence. Your work encourages new ways of thinking, nurtures student potential and helps them discover their talents and skills.

No matter your role, you are integral to the University of Alberta's story. Let's make this year one of discovery, achievement and community.

Sincerely,

Bill Flanagan
President and Vice-Chancellor
