Top five reasons to attend Luminaria’s return

After a year-long hiatus, Luminaria is making its much-anticipated return to the University of Alberta Botanic Garden (UABG) this December.

This cherished winter tradition is going back to its essence, honouring its natural, serene origins and offering attendees a peaceful escape during the year’s darkest nights. With limited tickets available and only three weekends to experience it, here’s why you should make plans to join in this magical celebration.

1. A return to simplicity and serenity

“We heard from many repeat patrons. We learned how much the tradition of Luminaria means to them, and we learned what they have loved the most. So, based on feedback from our community, the Garden is bringing Luminaria back in its purest form,” says UABG Director, Carl Charest. “We’re unplugging most of the electric lights and returning to the elements we began with — candlelight, starlight and firelight — surrounded by nature.”

It’s the perfect setting to slow down, reflect and reconnect with the peaceful essence of the season.

2. Fewer crowds, more intimacy

In response to guest feedback, this year’s Luminaria will feature a much smaller audience, with only 8,100 tickets available across nine evenings. That’s less than a third of the tickets offered in previous years, ensuring a tranquil and unrushed experience for attendees.

Whether you’re sipping hot cider by the fire or listening to the acapella group, the smaller crowds make it easier to soak in the event’s quiet magic.

3. A tradition worth reviving

For many, attending Luminaria has become an annual tradition — a moment to pause amidst the busy holiday season. This year’s event promises to rekindle those cherished traditions while inviting new visitors to start their own. If you’ve never been to Luminaria before, this is your opportunity to unwind after a busy semester or a chance to share a magical evening with loved ones — and could even become a yearly highlight for you and your family.

4. A unique way to celebrate the season

Luminaria isn’t your typical holiday event. It’s a celebration of nature’s beauty and the simple joys of winter. Guests can light a candle in memory of a loved one, hang a star on a Wish Tree, enjoy the warmth of a roaring fire pit or listen to the ethereal harmonies of live acappella singers. The little ones can play detective on a scavenger hunt that ends with a nature-inspired take-home prize. These quiet moments offer a refreshing contrast to the hustle and bustle of the season, allowing you to focus on what matters most.

5. An experience for the senses

From the soft glow of candles lining the curving pathways to the crisp winter air and the aroma of hot apple cider, Luminaria delights all the senses. Each element — light, sound, scent and taste — combines to create a deeply immersive experience that stays with you long after the evening ends.
