It is that time of the year again — the time to celebrate your loved ones! Love is in the air in February as couples eagerly wait to celebrate Valentine’s Day. But what if you are not someone’s significant other? What if you have not found the love of your life yet? What if you are single this Valentine’s Day? What if you’ve recently gone through a breakup?
While a lot of people like Valentine’s Day, it can be a time of the year that many single people (like me!) detest. I mean, I wish I had a valentine to send me flowers (please send some my way, thanks!). I am 21 and have never had a valentine. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day!
I celebrate Valentine’s Day because I love myself and I can be my own valentine! In my early teenage years, I felt extremely alone and unloved especially during February. After I went through a breakup, those feelings came back again, and I missed my partner. Being single, both before and after dating someone, can be miserable, and we do not necessarily have to brush those feelings off. However, we do need to practice self care and show ourselves some love, no matter what our relationship status is.
After all, can you really be someone’s significant other, when you do not love and know yourself in the first place? So, if you find yourself single this Valentine’s Day, show yourself some love and be your own Valentine!
But how do you accomplish that? I have been treating myself on Valentine’s Day for a long time, so are six ways I suggest being your own valentine on February 14:
Do some skin care
What could be a better way to spend the morning of your Valentine’s Day than by doing some relaxing skin care like putting on a face mask and doing an in-home mani and pedi? YouAlberta writer Alex has some great skincare tips.
Dress to impress
Got a cute outfit? Well, why not put it on and dress nicely for your own self!
Buy yourself a present (or two!)
Do not waste this Valentine’s Day waiting for someone to give you an amazing present. Trust me, gifting something to yourself is an amazing way to show yourself some love!
Have a movie date with yourself
Treat yourself with your favorite foods and a good movie (no rom-coms!).
Talk to your family or friends
Give your family or friends a call and remind yourself that love comes in many forms, not just romantic relationships.
Say ‘I love you’
Remember to remind yourself that you are worthy of love. Say ‘I love you ‘ to yourself before going to bed (and mean it!) and wrap up your Valentine’s Day!
