Here’s my list of unique, romantic, and fun-filled date ideas just a hop, skip and a jump from North Campus. From cozy cafes to outdoor adventures and even charming gift shops, this guide is full of options to help you make your Valentine's Day a special one.

Things to do

Cat Cafe on Whyte: Cats and coffee, what better combination could you ask for if you are an animal lover? The calm and peaceful atmosphere of this cafe creates a purrfect setting for a romantic and intimate date, where you can spend quality time together and bond over soothing kitty cuddles and unlimited drinks.

YardBird Suite: Edmonton's Jazz club is off the beaten path, tucked just behind the Fringe grounds. It boasts a sophisticated and intimate environment with live music and light snacks making it the perfect backdrop for a romantic evening to remember.

Hexagon Board Game Cafe: This is a cozy spot to spend quality time together and try out some new games. Hexagon offers a wide variety of games, from classic favourites to exciting new options. Whether you're a seasoned board gamer or don't have much experience, it's a fun and unique way to celebrate your love.

Ice Skating: Gliding hand in hand, surrounded by beautiful winter scenery, is a memorable way to spend an evening with your loved one. Whether you're experienced skaters or trying it for the first time, it's sure to be unforgettable. The community leagues of Ritchie and Old Strathcona both have outdoor ice rinks only a short distance from campus.

Sid’s Selfie World: This unique selfie gallery is home to a variety of colourful and imaginative backdrops perfect for taking whimsical photos with your partner! Immortalize your love in this fun, playful environment and capture some beautiful moments.

Crankpots: This adorable ceramics painting studio is a fun and interactive way to spend this Valentine's Day, so choose a piece of pottery to paint and get creative. Possibly even paint something for each other! The experience allows you to be playful and spontaneous and to create a one-of-a-kind keepsake together. The studio provides a relaxed and intimate setting where you can enjoy each other's company while being creative. Once you're finished, you'll have beautiful, hand-painted mementos to take home.

The Blues on Whyte Kiss Tribute Concert: Whether you're long-time fans or new to the music, a Kiss tribute concert is a unique and exciting way to spend Valentine's Day with your sweetheart. Their energetic rock music will have you singing “I was made for loving you!” and leave you with fond, fun memories that will last a lifetime.

The Lobby Video Store: If you are looking to stay in on Valentine's Day, pop into the Lobby for a nostalgic video rental experience. Pick out a film together in this spooky establishment and cozy up back at home with your popcorn and snacks to watch a movie old-school style.

Free Options: If you’re tight on money but still want to have a memorable evening, consider walking down Whyte Ave to Dr. Wilbert Mcintyre Park to view the stunning ice sculptures that were carved at last month's Ice on Whyte festival. This park features an adorable gazebo, making it a perfect romantic destination. Walking along Saskatchewan Drive will bring you to the River Valley Overlook, where you will see stunning views of Edmonton’s skyline. On your way home, stop by Wizards Comics on 109th for a few games on their play-by-donation pinball machines.
