YouAlberta’s Fall Term fashion tips

What are you wearing this fall? We asked four YouAlberta writers to give us a bit of advice on style and accessorizing during this transitional season.

Jeremy

YouAlberta is written by students for students.

Jeremy (he/him) is in his final year of a MA in Communications and Technology (MACT) at the U of A. When he's not writing a paper or reading a book, you can find him on some of Edmonton's river valley trails, or trying to get sendy on his skis.

Cooler temperatures, clear days and golden leaves all over campus mean one thing: it’s fall. With the hot dog days of summer certainly over (and breezy outfits making their way to storage), we’re starting to break out the transitional wardrobe. If you want some ideas on what to wear or how to accessorize, four YouAlberta writers have some advice.

Rebeca

Rebeca: Wear mittens!

As someone who arrives on campus early in the morning and leaves late, it is always cold and windy when I’m walking to class. Often I’m wearing a hoodie or a vest with small pockets, and so my hands will get very cold and my skin dry. This is why I wear mittens even in the fall, to keep my hands warm and get ready to take notes during class!

Do you have an item or accessory of the season?

U of A mittens. The mittens are special because they are very warm and cozy, and they are also good to bring to campus because they have the U of A logo.

Jaden

Jaden: Culture is pride; culture is beauty

Some people may shy away from wearing cultural clothes, perhaps feeling it is too overt in some way. However, I think incorporating such pieces in your closet can not only make your outfits very distinct and unique but also allow you to represent parts of your identity. How you choose to dress yourself can reflect who you are as a person and be a celebration of who you are. So if you have traditional pieces, even if you think they are too extravagant, try mixing them with your modern day-to-day wear. As long as you wear them respectfully, it’ll add an extra layer of elegance and elevation to your fit!

Do you have an item or accessory of the season?

Maru Hanbok Pants. I purchased these pants during my exchange abroad in South Korea in my search for saenghwal hanbok, or traditional Korean clothes for daily wear. As someone strongly influenced by and with a deep appreciation of East Asia, I have always been inclined to incorporate clothes influenced by these cultures. I stumbled across an independent brand called Leesle near where I was living and found these pants, along with some other pieces. Blending the modern with the traditional, they’re perfect for my style and a beautiful reminder of my time in Seoul.

Iman

Iman: Cozy Girl Fall

So, the summer has officially come to an end and it's finally fall. Who doesn't wanna celebrate the season with some cute fall outfits before the cold winter sets in and your fashion statements get covered up by giant, puffy winter jackets and scarves? Oh, but you say you have assignments to do? So much to do, so little time? Well, put on your favourite comfy fall sweater (or cardigan, we don't judge), get that laptop charged up and ready to go and accessorize (and get caffeinated at the same time) with a nice, hot Pumpkin Spice Latte. Bonus points if it's from The Daily Grind!

Do you have an item or accessory of the season?

Pumpkin spice latte. Not only does it provide you the caffeine you need to crush those assignments, but it adds to your outfits fall vibes while doing so!

Jeremy

Jeremy: Layer up

I often head to campus early in the morning (when it’s cool out), walk around throughout the day (when it’s warmer) and then go home in the evening (when the sun is down and it’s cool again). I’ll often be wearing three or four layers, letting me pick and choose what’s needed depending on where I am and the time of day, so I’m always at an optimal temperature and comfort level.

Do you have an item or accessory of the season?

This Kapital Ring Coat is a fun item in that it’s both interesting to wear and very practical. With a large hood and collar, it offers a bit of protection on windy days, and its loose fit allows me to wear a sweater or two if it’s chillier out. I love having a lot of large pockets on a jacket; this one often carries sunglasses, keys, airpods, a snack, some tissues and a pair of gloves on cold days.
