YouAlberta is written by students for students.

Marlena (she/her) is in her third year of English and History major in the Faculty of Arts. Originally from Vancouver, Marlena joined the U of A from B.C. last year; however, her family is originally from Germany. She plans to study in the After Degree Education program to become a teacher once she completes her BA. Outside of school, she is a busy bee dedicating her time to volunteering and work. Marlena escapes the buzz by taking time to read, listen to music, walk her three dogs, watch movies and discover Edmonton’s cafe scene. She prefers Rutherford South for its quiet atmosphere and historical architecture.

As September rolls around, I have curated a list of my top 5 must-attend events to kick off the fall season. Whether you are looking to meet new friends, go shopping or step outside your comfort zone, there is something for everyone. Here are 5 events on campus I'll be checking out to make the most of this vibrant month.

Check out more upcoming campus events on the U of A Events Hub!

If you love markets like me, then this is a must-see! The HUB Craftopia Market is set to transform U of A's HUB Mall into a vibrant center of creativity. This event is a fantastic opportunity to explore a diverse range of one-of-a-kind items crafted by local makers.

By shopping here, you are not just getting something special; you are also supporting local artisans and small businesses in the community. Don't miss this chance to experience the talent and creativity that Edmonton has to offer!

Week of Welcome

Sept. 3 - 7
North Campus Main Quad

Every year, during the first week of the fall semester, the UASU hosts the Week of Welcome (WOW) to kick off the new academic year with a blast, creating an exciting atmosphere that brings the entire U of A community together.

WOW is an action-packed week full of events designed to offer something for everyone. The highlights of the event include live outdoor music, where you can enjoy performances by talented artists.

In particular, I enjoy starting my morning before my first class with the free daily pancake breakfast! Also, there are a variety of ticketed evening events that promise unforgettable experiences. Whether you are a new student or returning for another year, WOW is the perfect place to connect, have fun and start the year off right!

Movie Night

Sept. 24, 5 - 9 p.m.
Horowitz Theatre, SUB
(Film titles TBA at upcoming events list)

As a lover of films, movie night is a must-see. This is a perfect midweek escape to relax and enjoy a great film with fellow students. Not only is it a great way to spend an evening, but it is also free admission — just don't forget your ONEcard to get in.

The evening kicks off with a selection of your favourite snacks for purchase at the concession stand, so you can grab some popcorn, candy or a drink before settling into your seat. Make sure to arrive early to grab the best seats and get ready for an entertaining evening at the Horowitz Theatre!

Karaoke Night

Sept. 18, 8 - 11 p.m.
Sept. 25, 8 - 11 p.m.
Dewey's, 8900 114 St Nw

Get ready to unleash your inner singer at Karaoke Night! Although I am not a good singer, it is always fun to step outside your comfort zone and test your musical abilities. This is your chance to take the stage and sing out your favourite songs in a fun, supportive atmosphere. Choose your go-to song, channel your favourite artist and show off your vocal skills or just have fun with friends as you sing along to classics.

Warm up those vocal cords, grab the mic, and get ready for a night of music and entertainment. Don't miss an opportunity to shine on stage or cheer on your friends.

This September is filled with multiple fun events to kick-start the new semester. It offers a chance to have fun, meet new people and interact with the U of A community. Be sure to attend one of my 5 recommendations, which I assure, will offer an enjoyable experience and make unforgettable memories!
