Areli

YouAlberta is written by students for students.

In the final year of her PhD in medicine, Areli has embraced Canada as her second home since 2019. Beyond the lab, where she’s unlocking the mysteries of cardiovascular and cancer biology, Areli’s life is filled with energy and adventure. Whether she’s scoring touchdowns on the football field, exploring the world or enjoying cozy moments with her dog and partner, she’s always finding ways to stay inspired and connected. Areli’s passion for collaboration and discovery fuels her dream of advancing translational medicine, aiming to make a global impact on healthcare and inspire the next wave of researchers to tackle the world’s biggest challenges. For Areli, life is a blend of science, family and seizing every moment to grow and make a difference.

When I arrived in Canada to start both my MSc and PhD in the Department of Medicine (DoM), I was an immigrant from Mexico, excited but unsure of what to expect. I was prepared for hard work, long hours and the occasional research roadblock. But I had no idea just how vibrant, supportive and downright inspiring this place would be!

From cutting-edge discoveries to a fierce commitment to diversity and well-being, here are 5 things that make this department more than just a place to study. As the DoM celebrates its 100th anniversary, learn about this community that brings out the best in all of us.

Your research, your way!

In the DoM, grad students aren't just along for the ride; we're right there in the driver's seat, taking charge of our research! There's room to innovate and push boundaries, whether you're diving into molecular mysteries or exploring new clinical therapies. And if that wasn't exciting enough, our work doesn't go unnoticed. The DoM Research Awards celebrate achievements across basic science, clinical investigation, translational research and more. Knowing that the department supports and recognizes our hard work is an incredible boost. Who doesn't want their name on that list?

Global health connections that open your eyes (and maybe some passport pages!)

Think the DoM is all about local health care? Think again! From international speakers to opportunities for global collaboration, our department brings the world to us…and sometimes sends us out into it! For me, these connections have been eye-opening. Being allowed to meet different speakers from different countries and learn about their stories, journeys and findings made me realize that we all have diverse backgrounds (as well as accents), but we all work toward the same goal.

These moments remind me that the work we do here transcends borders. It's thrilling to know that our discoveries in Edmonton might one day influence care in a small clinic in rural Mexico or a bustling hospital in London. The DoM gives us a front-row seat to the future of medicine, shaped by a global team of passionate and curious minds.

Diversity, inclusion and anti-racism: It's not just talk, it's action

Coming from Mexico, I was curious (and maybe a little apprehensive) about how I'd fit into the academic environment in Canada. My worries evaporated within weeks of joining the department. The DoM doesn't just talk about equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism; it lives by these values.

Walking through the department, you encounter people from all corners of the globe, representing a remarkable mix of backgrounds, religions, races and experiences. Over the years, I've been fortunate to form friendships with colleagues from Spain, India, Ghana, Greece, Japan, Mali, China and Korea. Each of them has brought unique perspectives that have enriched my understanding of both science and life.

The DoM EDII Committee is the driving force behind this vibrant culture, ensuring that everyone feels seen, heard and valued. Here, diversity isn't just celebrated; it's the foundation of what makes us stronger. Whether it's through open discussions, engaging events or support networks, the department creates spaces where we can learn from one another and grow together.

A tight-knit community that's got your back

Graduate studies can be isolating, but not here at the DoM. From day one, I felt like I was part of a family. Professors here don't just teach; they mentor. All throughout my program, my supervisor had the patience and commitment to guide me through some of the most challenging moments of my research journey.

I remember one particularly daunting week during my second year. I was running an experiment with a new protocol, and nothing seemed to work. Frustration mounted as I faced repeated failures and began to doubt myself. Instead of letting me spiral, my supervisor stepped in with calm reassurance. They sat with me, analyzing the data, helping me pinpoint what went wrong and, more importantly, showed me how to fix it.

But the support I've received isn't just limited to one-on-one interactions. The culture in the DoM is one of collaboration over competition. My labmates and I often brainstorm solutions together, share resources and celebrate each other's achievements. Whether it's a mini-celebration for a published paper or a group lunch to de-stress, these moments of friendship have made all the difference in my experience.

Wellness resources that help you thrive

Grad school can be a grind, but the DoM has amazing resources to help us stay balanced, focused and ready to tackle whatever comes next. With counselling services and mental health workshops available, we have access to wellness resources that keep us grounded. The department's approach to wellness isn't just lip service; it's a recognition that we perform our best when we're taking care of ourselves.
