Sometimes, I can devour a reading; other times, I reread the same sentence without a lick of comprehension. I've found that putting on headphones with an audiobook of the text I'm reading (or even getting a text-to-speech program to read a PDF) while I also read the text helps to ensure I remember what I want to learn.
I also need to make sure that I have capacity to study. Sometimes, taking a break is the only way I can ensure I'll be able to handle the incoming tasks the following day.
I usually listen to one song on repeat to get in the zone, and I like to have multiple "stations" to turn my energy to when I feel the motivation waning. This method helps my brain access dopamine, and helps me achieve my goals.

It's essential that my study space is well-illuminated. I place my desk beside my window or look for study spots on campus with natural sunlight. During the wintertime, when it gets dark early, I decorate my study space at home with colourful lights.
My other study essential is music. I like to study listening to classical music, jazz and instrumental boleros. A playlist with these three genres motivates me to study and helps me concentrate — it makes me feel that I am the main character of an epic movie! And, of course, a good match for a study playlist is some noise-cancelling headphones.

I can't live without plants! I love having a pop of greenery and colour in my workspace, especially in the wintertime. Even if you don't have a green thumb, there are some plants, such as snake plants, cacti or peace lilies, that require little water and less attention.
Another essential is a giant whiteboard—which is perhaps more practical than plants—because I love to be able to brainstorm, plan out research or have a large space to write down ideas — a space that isn't on a screen. As a PhD student, I'm constantly thinking about my research in different ways, and jotting things down on a big whiteboard really helps me.

One must-have for my study space is a dim light lamp. I find myself focusing more easily with dim lighting, and white light often distracts me.
Another tip to make your study space functional and cozy is to always have some snacks, like chocolate, to help you focus and reduce stress.

Personally, there are three things I do to have the best study experience possible:
- Hydration: It's often dry in Edmonton in the winter, so I like to have a water bottle handy to drink from.
- Posture: I'll set the height on my chair, use books under my laptop/the book I'm reading and make sure I'm sitting reasonably well so I can study without getting pain.
- Breaks: I'll set alarms on my phone for every hour to remind me to stand up and stretch as well as to look around (at something further away) to reduce eye strain.
I hope these help! Always remember: Maintaining a positive attitude/mindset is the #1 trick to successfully studying. Don't panic, and know that you'll get through your exams just fine.
