Make your mark on campus: submit an idea to the Campus Recreation Enhancement Fund

Jeremy wants you to give your input on campus improvements.

YouAlberta is written by students for students.

Jeremy (he/him) is in his final year of a MA in Communications and Technology (MACT) at the U of A. When he's not writing a paper or reading a book, you can find him on some of Edmonton's river valley trails, or trying to get sendy on his skis.

As a U of A student, I think the Campus Recreation Enhancement Fund (CREF) is one of the coolest opportunities we have to shape campus life. This fund exists to support student ideas that enhance the quality of recreational services — whether that means a new fitness area, a chill-out zone or something completely unique. If you’ve ever had an idea that could make campus a better place to play, connect or relax, this is your chance to make it happen.

What's CREF?

CREF is a fund dedicated to enhancing student recreation and wellness. It supports new spaces, improved facilities and programs that make campus life more engaging. The best part? The ideas come from students. Where does the money come from? A portion of undergraduate student fees are dedicated to enhancing recreation opportunities on campus for all students.

If selected, you’ll get to present your idea to the CREF committee, which will decide which projects get funded. It’s not just about submitting a form — it’s about pitching a vision that could make life better for everyone at the U of A.

Why this matters

University isn’t just about lectures and exams. It’s also about community, movement and finding ways to de-stress. If there’s a commitment to improving campus spaces, we should step up with good ideas. Whether it’s for fitness, relaxation or fun, we have the power to make campus life better for ourselves and future students.

What's been funded before?

CREF has already made a big impact, and I think the past projects (funding year in brackets) really show how diverse student recreation can be:

  • Outdoor gym (2017–2018): A year-round, accessible workout space so students can stay active outside for free.
  • Beach volleyball courts (2018–2019): Near Lister Residence, perfect for friendly matches and summer vibes.
  • Outdoor activity space (2019–2020): Features table tennis and cornhole — because sometimes you just need a casual game break between classes.
  • Outdoor basketball courts (2020–2021): A go-to space for pickup games and social activity.
  • Gaming room (2021–2022): Recreation isn’t just about sports—this e-sports space gives students a dedicated place to game, connect and unwind.

These spaces exist because students like us pitched them. So what’s missing? What could make our campus even better?

It’s not just about sports

If you think you need to propose a sports project, think again. Recreation is about play, connection and relaxation — that could mean a cozy board game den (one of these was funded through the grant, check it out!), an upgraded music jam space or even an arts/crafts lounge. If it makes recreation at the U of A better, it’s worth submitting.

How to submit your idea

If you have an idea, don’t sit on it — apply now! Here’s what you need to know:

  • Application Deadline: February 28, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.
  • How to Apply: Fill out the online application in one session (so have your details ready). If your idea is selected, you’ll be invited to present it to the CREF committee before final decisions are made.
  • Ready? Submit your application.

Let’s step up and shape our community spaces

I love that this fund exists because it shows that the university is committed to making our campuses better. But that only works if students step up with good ideas. Whether you’re passionate about fitness, relaxation or just making campus a more fun and engaging place, your proposal could be the next great addition to the U of A.

So, what’s your idea? Let’s get creative and make the U of A even better.
