Move, connect, thrive: spring and summer wellness with Campus & Community Recreation (CCR)

Need a fun way to de-stress, get active and maybe even make some new friends? Ashley explores the accessible and varied programs offered.

Ashley (she/her), born and raised in Sherwood Park, is an ambitious student passionate about adventure. Known for her creativity and friendly spirit, she has practiced highland dancing—a Scottish tradition—for over 20 years! Ashley has even had the unique experience of performing at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland. She is a zealous traveller who has explored numerous countries through school and dance and plans to continue these global adventures. Ashley has a BSc in psychology from the U of A and is now in her first year of pursuing her MA in ancient societies and cultures. Next on her academic journey is to pursue her PhD. Ashley’s favourite campus spots include Old Arts and Convocation Hall, where she enjoys studying and reminiscing about her undergrad convocation.


When I first tried a drop-in martial arts class through CCR, I had zero expectations and even less coordination. But that’s the beauty of their programs — you don’t need to be a pro.

Whether you're new to the U of A or just looking for ways to shake up your routine this summer, CCR offers fun and welcoming ways to move your body, meet new people and take care of your mental health. With classes ranging from ballet to kickboxing, and a handy online tool to help you find the right fit, there’s something here for everyone – no matter your background or experience level. 

Stepping into something completely unfamiliar was refreshing in the best way. I got a great workout, learned a few techniques I never thought I’d try and left feeling energized. The atmosphere was friendly and low-pressure, with instructors who focused on skill-building and fun, not perfection. 

Later on, I signed up for a ballet class. This one was especially meaningful for me — I had trained in ballet but hadn’t practiced in years. The class met in the Dorothy Harris Dance Studio, right on North Campus, which meant I could dash over after lectures without missing a beat (or a plié). The structure, flow and music gave me a chance to move mindfully and reconnect with my body in a way that was both calming and invigorating. 

Physical movement is known to boost endorphins and reduce stress, but there’s something extra fulfilling about doing it in a community setting. Many students, especially those spending the summer away from home or navigating life in Edmonton for the first time, find that these classes help make the university feel more like a community than just a campus. 

For international students in particular, CCR can be a fantastic entry point into social life in Edmonton. The classes are open to all skill levels, and they’re full of people looking to unwind and connect. Whether you’re joining a Zumba class, trying kickboxing or relaxing with tai chi or yoga, you’re bound to meet classmates from all walks of life. Shared experiences tend to break the ice, and you might leave a class with sore legs and a new friend or two. 

CCR’s class offerings span a broad range of interests. There’s everything from high-energy cardio workouts and martial arts, to strength training, recreational sports and calming practices like yoga and Pilates. You can also find specialized programs in dance, aquatics, racquet sports and even outdoor adventures. The programs are seasonal, with new offerings each semester. 

One of the most helpful features is the Find a Program tool, which lets you filter through dozens of options based on your interests, schedule and experience level. I’ve used it to find evening classes that fit between my work and class commitments, and it takes a lot of guesswork out of getting started. This tool makes it easy to find something that works for you!

Of course, not everything requires registration. CCR also offers drop-in fitness classes and access to facilities like the pool, gym, climbing wall and indoor track. With your ONEcard, you can pop in for a workout or swim whenever your schedule allows. For those needing flexibility or just wanting to try things out before committing, this is a great option. 

On days when making it to campus feels tough, CCR even has online programming options through platforms like Bright Breaks — short movement and mindfulness sessions you can do from your living room or study space. It’s a great way to take a breath, stretch your body and reset your mind, especially during hectic exam seasons or long stretches of research.
