About Me

Dr. Ahmed Hammad recently joined University of Alberta as an Associate Professor in Construction Engineering and Management after 2 years at University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Prior to joining academia, Dr. Hammad spent 25 years in construction industry as Project Planning & Control Manager. His responsibilities included project scope management using WBS & work packages, planning & scheduling, cost estimating & control, management of change and risk management. He has experience working on Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) phases of several mega multi-billion dollar Infrastructure, Commercial, Oil Sands, Offshore Conventional Oil and Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) projects. These projects were planned and executed in Canada, USA, South Korea, UAE, Australia and Egypt. Dr. Hammad has published several journal and conference papers, provided training in project management, and developed integrated project planning and control systems for three global EPC firms.

Education:

  • Doctorate of Philosophy, Construction Engineering & Management, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. 2009.
  • Master of Science, Construction Engineering & Management, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. 1999.
  • Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Construction Engineering and Management, Cairo University, Egypt, 1996.
  • Bachelor of Science, Civil Engineering, Mansoura University, Mansoura, Egypt. 1989.

Research

Main research interest is applying multidimensional pillars of sustainability (Economic, Environmental and Social) in construction project management. This will be achieved throughout: application of Information Technology, Data Mining and Multiple-Criteria / Multiple-Objective Decision Making (MCDM / MODM) techniques to maximize efficiency and minimize waste in all phases of EPC projects. Specific research areas include:

  • Impact of selecting Project Delivery Method (PDM) on sustainability
  • Implementation of Advanced Work Packaging (AWP), Remote Sensors and 6D Building Information Modeling (BIM) for automated acquisition of construction data
  • Application of: Data Warehousing, On Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) Reporting and Data Mining techniques for extracting useful knowledge from multiple projects’ data
  • Utilization of Knowledge-Based Decision Support Systems (KBDSS) to maximize laboour & equipment efficiency and minimize materials waste
  • Practical methods for generating incentives and maximizing implementation of Sustainability Indicators (SI) in construction industry
  • Utilizing Operation and Maintenance (O & M) data to design, procure and construct more sustainable facilities
  • Impact of multicultural / multidiscipline virtual project teams on productivity

Research Currently in Progress:
  • Application of Data Mining to address the most challenging construction problems; schedule delays and cost overruns
  • Application of MCDM techniques to select most sustainable buildings methodologies and construction materials
  • Impact of Qualifications-Based Selection (QBS) of Architectural and Engineering (A/E) Services on Project Outcomes, in collaboration with Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA)
  • Development of Knowledge-based Model for Allocation of Project Resources, in collaboration with the City of Edmonton, Alberta Ministry of Infrastructure and University of Alberta – Project Management Office (U of A - PMO)
