Dr. Shih-Chung (Jessy) Kang recently joined the Nasseri School of Building Science and Engineering at University of Alberta. He is leading a research team to develop robotics solutions for the building industry. He is designing a new robot lab (R-Lab) that supports interdisciplinary research to introduce robotics to construction sites. Equipped with multiple robots, sensor networks, virtual reality devices and computation units, the lab allows simulation of a variety of construction scenarios and develops innovative construction methods by integrating sensors, artificial intelligence and automatic machines. Robotics solutions will significantly increase the productivity of construction projects, improve the safety of the sites, and reduce the impact from labour shortages, especially in North America.
Dr. Kang obtained his Ph.D. from Stanford in 2005 and worked in National Taiwan University (NTU) from 2006 to 2018. He has published five textbooks, over 100 papers and eight patents on construction technologies. He has led research projects to develop a smart robo-crane, pavement inspection robots and an autonomous erection system. He is co-editor-in-chief of a Springer Journal, Visualization in Engineering. Dr. Kang obtained an excellent teaching award from NTU. His courses in Coursera, an online learning platform, attract more than 30,000 online learners. Dr. Kang is also an entrepreneur, co-founding Smart-Aging Tech, a company that offers data services for healthcare.
