1. Traditional Mechanical Engineering program

Our traditional (four-year) Mechanical Engineering program covers a diverse range of engineering fields with five major areas of study: solid mechanics and dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, mechanical design, and engineering management. Examples of more specialized areas of work include acoustics, aerodynamics, biomechanical engineering, combustion engines, energy conversion systems, environmental engineering, and material science including fracture and fatigue, robotics and vehicle design.

2. Cooperative Education Program

The Faculty of Engineering offers one of the largest and most successful co-op programs in Canada, which incorporates paid, supervised work experience in your undergraduate degree. Co-op students complement their academic studies and gain valuable work experience with five four-month terms of full-time employment that are interspersed with academic terms. Because of the work experience, a degree with the Co-op designation requires five years to complete. Approximately 50 percent of Mechanical Engineering students register for the co-op option.

Academic requirements are identical for the co-op and traditional programs.

3. The Biomedical Co-op Option

Biomedical Engineering (BME) applies engineering design, thermo-fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, and material concepts to biological and medical areas of research. Biomedical engineers work to better understand how the human body works in order to improve our health care and our quality of life. Some examples of biomedical engineering projects include developing new surgical equipment or diagnostic tools, and developing short and long term treatment programs and rehabilitation equipment.

Clinicians, doctors and engineers work better if they understand each other. Therefore, students in the BME program require a strong interdisciplinary background and take additional courses and complete clinical placements. Clinical placements are arranged in cooperation with the Faculty of Engineering co-op program, though students can find their own placements as well. Most jobs are in Alberta, but some jobs are elsewhere in Canada or overseas.

Up to 15 students are accepted into the biomedical option every year. This option is available only as a co-op program where academic terms are interspersed with work terms in industry or research labs. Please note, the program does not meet all premed requirements.

4. Elective Course Streams

Elective course streams have been developed by the Department of Mechanical Engineering to suggest the combination of elective courses that will provide students with specialized training in specific areas. Currently, the Department has developed a Biomedical Engineering Elective Stream, a Business and Management Elective Stream, and an Aerospace Engineering Elective Stream. The Faculty of Engineering, in collaboration with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has created several minor programs for engineering students with the objective of providing students with opportunities to deepen and broaden their knowledge in subject matter areas that support the engineering professional. Some of these minor programs also aim to diversify the knowledge base of engineering students through the exploration and study of non-technical subject matter.
