Research

The University of Alberta Faculty of Engineering conducts leading-edge, interdisciplinary research and is awarded more than $65 million in research funding per year.

We have identified four strategic areas of research:

Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering

We are transforming healthcare and life sciences by using engineering principles to develop new technology and treatments. Biomedical engineering advances knowledge in engineering, biology, and medicine to improve human health.

Energy, Natural Resources, and the Environment

We are working to meet the challenges of future energy and environmental stewardship. This includes traditional and alternative energy sources, and innovative approaches to environmental protection and remediation.

Information and Communications Technologies

Our ground-breaking research makes science fiction reality, changing the way information is managed, shared, stored, protected, and presented.

Nanotechnology and Interfacial Engineering

Nanotechnology studies and manipulates structures as small as a strand of DNA. We are at the frontier of a new field, bringing together the disciplines of engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine.
