Conversion of Asphaltenes and Coal

Direct Applicability to Industry:

Asphaltenes derived from oilsands bitumen and low rank coal have the potential to be converted into higher value liquid products. Millions of tons of these raw materials are produced in Alberta each year but little is being done with them.

Nature of Problem:

Current industrial pathways for conversion of solid carbonaceous materials to liquid products are inefficient and expensive.

Financial and Environmental Impact:

Increasing the value of asphaltenes and low rank coal will have a positive economic impact for Alberta.
