The OSTRF's Student Industry Interaction Days give students an opportunity to present their current research projects to members of the oil sands industry.

At the last Interaction Day, Heng Chen (MSc Environmental Eng.) presented his work on the fast preparation of activated carbon from petroleum coke using microwave activation. Chen's experiments used delayed coke samples provided by the OSTRF and and fluid coke samples provided by Syncrude. Chen and three other engineering students prepared a business plan for the commercialization of this research for the 5th Annual Centre for Entrepreneurship and Family Enterprise Students Business Competition. From this competition, they advanced to compete in the Alberta-wide TecEdmonton VenturePrize Awards. Chen's team won first place in the Student Business Plan Category and are in the process of patenting their work.

"This is the kind of innovation the OSTRF produces," says Dr. Dave Sego, Founder of the OSTRF. "Who would of thought of using microwave to activate coke [for oil sands tailings treatment]? Now this technology is ready to be implemented in the industry."
