The OSTRF's mandate is to facilitate research and development of the new tailings processes and provide research support to existing tailings management practices. The Facility allows researchers from diverse backgrounds and academic institutions to conduct novel research projects to mitigate the effects of oil sands tailings operations on the environment.
These world-renown researchers work on various aspects of oil sands production, from oil sands processing and tailings reclamation to water treatment and land reclamation, at the OSTRF. The OSTRF provides crucial infrastructure for collaborative and multidisciplinary research at the intermediate scale not presently available for university research in Canada, compared to existing bench and full-scale research efforts. The pilot plant is equipped with specialized equipment to allow testing of a variety of processes and technologies, aimed at reducing the environmental impact of oil sand tailings disposal.
