NSERC Industrial Research Chair in the Industrialization of Building Construction

About Us

The NSERC IRC in the Industrialization of Building Construction is one of sixteen Industrial Research Chairs at the University of Alberta. Dr. Mohamed Al-Hussein was appointed Chairholder of the IRC upon its establishment in July, 2011, and, today, the IRC research program is supported by 12 industrial partners.

Dr. Al-Hussein's research team actively collaborates with industry stakeholders and other research groups, including other IRCs at the University of Alberta. Also within the University of Alberta's construction engineering group, Dr. Simaan M. AbouRizk holds the NSERC IRC in Construction Engineering and Management, and Dr. Aminah Robinson Fayek holds the NSERC IRC in Strategic Construction Modeling and Delivering.

The research delivered by the IRC is being implemented and utilized by industry partners in innovative applications. The IRC's team of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research staff, and support staff occupy lab and office space in the fourth floor of the Markin/CNRL Natural Resources Engineering Facility, but regularly travel to sites and manufacturing facilities to collect and analyze data, carry out field observations and plant tours, and collaborate with industry practitioners to confront the challenges facing today's construction industry.
