Checkers: 20 Storey Tall Wood Building Project

Post Doc: Dr. Mohamed Nadim Adi (Architectural design and details)

Researches: Ahmad Alrifai, Gurjeet Singh (Physical model)

Time Period: Sept. 2013 - Nov. 2014

Summary: This project explored the possibility to use heavy wood as a structural material to design Canada’s first tall wood building. The design process explored the benefits of using wood and made recommendations that would be used to influence the Canadian building code. It was presented in several cities all over Canada (Edmonton, Montreal, Vancouver, and Ottawa) with good reception from designers, developers, and legislators. The aim is to demonstrate the feasibility of wood as a building material for tall buildings. A publication about the design process is expected soon.
