Dr. Karim El-Basyouny is an Associate Professor and inaugural City of Edmonton’s Research Chair in Urban Traffic Safety at the University of Alberta. He holds a Master’s of Science degree (2006) and PhD (2011) in Transportation Engineering, specializing in Traffic Safety from the University of British Columbia, Canada. His research focuses on traffic safety, and more recently on speed management and the role of intelligent transportation systems in improving safety. Over the past few years, Dr. El-Basyouny’s research has been supported by several Canadian grants from federal, provincial, regional, and municipal agencies. Currently, Dr. Karim El-Basyouny is a co-investigator for several projects on intelligent transportation systems, connected vehicles, and traffic safety. He is also collaboratively working on a number of research projects to develop an optimized scheduling framework to improve the deployment of mobile photo enforcement. Dr. El-Basyouny is also continuing his earlier work on the statistical analysis of collision and speed data, where he has proposed several novel methodological contributions.

Dr. El-Basyouny's research is focused on applying transportation engineering principles and research evaluation methodologies to improve urban traffic safety in the areas of traffic operations and planning, geometric and roadside design, and speed management.
His research has focused on five primary areas leading to several contributions published in prestigious journals and international conferences.
1. Statistical Analysis of Crashes – data issues and novel methodological alternatives: This work addressed key issues related to crash modeling. The goals are to improve the predictive power and fit of safety models as well as to address several key data and methodological issues when modeling crashes.
2. Safety Intervention Analysis ‐ novel evaluation techniques: The focus of this work is on adopting an evidence‐based approach to evaluate the safety of improvement programs. The goals are to document the impact of the implemented programs by developing novel methods for road safety assessment.
3. Speed Management: The focus of this work is to develop effective and evidence‐based methods to manage speeds. The goal is to create a safe, secure, and environmentally friendly urban transportations system through speed management.
4. Automated Enforcement: The focus of this work is to develop an optimized deployment framework for Automated Enforcement Programs. This work is conducted in collaboration with Dr. Amy Kim from the University of Alberta.
5. Understanding the Challenges of Urban Traffic Safety: Work in this area is exploratory in nature and focuses primarily on understanding the challenges and issues that cause safety issues in urban built environments.
