Student Profiles

Laura Cabral
Laura Cabral began her MSc in Transportation Engineering in September 2017, under the supervision of Dr. Amy Kim. After completing her Bachelor's in Environmental Studies at the Université de Sherbrooke, she wanted to apply and expand her environmental knowledge to a more specific object of study. This is what motived her to join Dr. Kim's group and research urban bicycle networks, at the crossroads of policy and engineering. Laura is herself a recent bicycle commuter and she enjoys baking old-style sourdough bread, knitting, and contemporary dance. She can be reached at lcabral@ualberta.ca.

Matt Woo
Matt Woo started his MSc in September 2015 under the supervision of Dr. Kim. His current research pertains to regional transportation planning and demand management. Matt's hobbies include skiing, rock climbing, hiking and tennis. His preferred mode of transportation is cycling. Matt can be reached at matthew.woo@ualberta.ca.

Chenhao Wang
Chenhao Wang started his studies as a master's student in September 2014 under the supervision of Dr. Qiu, and he undertook his bachelor degree at Tongji University in China. His research focus is Intelligent Transportation Systems, particularly cellular probe technology. During his spare time, Chenhao enjoys playing badminton, biking, and travelling around the world. Lian Gu
Lian Gu began her MSc in September 2016 under the joint supervision of Dr. Qiu and Dr. Kwon. She received her Bachelor of Engineering from Jilin University in China. Her current research pertains to winter road maintenance and location optimization of ITS facilities. She enjoys dancing, travelling and photography. Lian can be reached at lgu2@ualberta.ca.

Kasturi Mahajan
Kasturi Mahajan began her MSc in September 2016 under the supervision of Dr. Amy Kim. She received her Bachelor of Engineering from Nagpur University in India. She enjoys painting, biking and photography. Kasturi can be reached at kasturi@ualberta.ca.

Danyang Sun
Danyang Sun began his MSc in September 2015, under the direction of Dr. El-Basyouny. He completed his BSc at Southeast University, China in 2014 and then worked as staff for Student Affairs at Southeast University from 2014 to 2015. Vishal Vadhadia
Vishal Vadhadia began his Masters degree in the field of transportation in September 2016. He completed his Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering at L.E. College in India. He is currently working with the Centre for Smart Transportation under the supervision of Dr. Tony Qiu. Vishal has experience in the design and construction of multi-lane highway projects. His research interest is Intelligent Transportation Systems and Transportation Planning. He loves tennis, hiking and chess. Vishal can be reached at vadhadia@ualberta.ca.

Difei
Difei He began his master's studies in September 2016 under the supervision of Dr. Qiu. His research focuses are urban transportation data analysis and GPS data processing. He completed his BSc in Urban Planning at University of Alberta. He enjoys basketball, soccer, and skiing. His favourite mode of transportation is high-speed railways. Lloyd Karsten
Lloyd Karsten started his MSc in Transportation Engineering in September 2017 under the supervision of Dr. Karim El-Basyouny. He received his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta. His research interests lie in the applications of remote sensing for transportation safety. Huanan (Kevin) Li
Huanan (Kevin) Li started his MSc in January 2018 under the supervision of Dr. Kim. He received his BSc from Dalian University of Technology. His current research focuses on distributed transportation modeling and the effects of climate change on reginal transportation. Kevin's hobbies include badminton, jogging and movies. Mohammed Ahmed
Mohammed Ahmed started his MSc in January 2018 under the supervision of Dr. Qiu. He received his bachelor degree in June 2017 at KSU in Saudi Arabia. His research focuses on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). He loves soccer, chess and hiking. Mohammed can be reached at mnahmed@ualberta.ca.

PhD Students

Suliman Gargoum
Suliman Gargoum earned his BSc degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the UAE University in 2012 and his Master's degree from the University of Alberta (UofA) in 2015. He is currently a Research and Teaching Assistant at the UofA, while also working towards obtaining a PhD degree. Before joining the U of A, Suliman worked as a Research Assistant at the UAEU and as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Benghazi. Suliman has been part of a number of research projects at the UofA including work with the City of Edmonton's Office of Traffic Safety, Edmonton's Police Service, and Alberta Transportation. He has also worked on a number of internal research projects sponsored by NSERC. Suliman has also authored a number of refereed journal and conference papers. His research interests lie in a broad range of topics including remote sensing, automated image analysis, statistical modelling, traffic safety and Intelligent Transportation Systems. Jiangchen Li
Jiangchen Li is a PhD student who has been working with Dr. Qiu since January 2015. His research interests include wireless communication, connected vehicles and traffic control. His BEng and MSc are from Huazhong University of Science and Technology's School of Optical and Electronic Information. Jiangchen's interests include jogging, table tennis, movies, and video games. Yang (Naomi) Li
Yang (Naomi) Li has been a PhD student in Transportation Engineering program at University of Alberta since September 2014, working under the joint supervision of Dr. Kim and Dr. El- Basyouny. Her current research focuses on developing resource allocation and scheduling strategies for speed management programs. Naomi can be reached at li18@ualberta.ca.

Mudasser Seraj
Mudasser Seraj started his MSc in Transportation Engineering in Fall 2014. After finishing his MSc, he started his PhD in Fall 2016. His supervisor is Dr. Qiu. Mudasser's existing research focuses on Variable Speed Limit (VSL) control freeway corridors. He completed his BSc in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He enjoys playing cricket, travelling and reading. Can Zhang
Can Zhang began his PhD studies in September 2015 under the supervision of Dr. Qiu. His research interests include ITS technologies and traffic modelling. Simita Biswas
Simita Biswas started her PhD in Transportation Engineering at University of Alberta from September 2017, under the supervision of Dr. Tae J. Kwon. She received her MSc degree in Transportation Engineering from University of Alberta in 2016 and BSc in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Her current research focus is winter transportation engineering and optimization of ITS facilities. She enjoys painting, dancing, swimming, travelling and photography. Chen Qiu
Chen Qiu began his PhD studies in September 2015. His supervisor is Dr. Qiu, and his research interests include data analysis of traveller behaviours and Intelligent Transportation Planning and integration of transportation and urban land use. He completed his BSc at Tsinghua University in Beijing and MSc at National Taiwan University in Taipei. He enjoys soccer, astronomy and travelling. His favourite mode of transportation is cycling. Yuwei Bie
Yuwei Bie began her PhD study in September 2016 and completed her MSc during 2014-2016, both under the supervision of Dr. Qiu. Her research focuses are connected vehicles in urban and rural environments and Intelligent Transportation System data analysis. She completed her BSc and B.Econ degrees at Peking University, and her MSc degree at University of Alberta. Her hobbies include sports, movies and travelling. Amr Shalkamy
Amr Shalkamy got his BSc and MSc from Cairo University in 2012 and 2015 respectively. He has been a PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Karim El-Basyouny since September 2016. Amr is working as a Teaching and Research assistant at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta. Amr is experienced in the design and planning of highways, airports and road networks, as he worked with Dar-Alhandasah-Cairo (one of the top 10 world Engineering consultants) for 4 years before joining the University of Alberta in 2016. He has worked on remarkable infrastructure projects such as the Dubai and Al-Maktoum International Airports. He has also authored two publications as a results of his masters work. His current research focuses on traffic safety, remote sensing, LiDAR data extraction and application methodologies, and highway geometric design. Amr can be reached at aamohame@ualberta.ca.

Sabrena Jahan
Sabrena Jahan Ohi started her Ph.D. studies in Transportation Engineering in Fall 2017. Her supervisor is Dr. Amy Kim. Her research focuses on Alberta Transportation Network studies. She has completed her Master's in Transportation Engineering from Yokohama National University (YNU) and B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Mostafa Tawfeek

Mostafa Tawfeek graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt (2010), and got his MSc degree in Transportation Engineering (2014). Mostafa worked as a transportation engineering teaching assistant for Ain Shams university, El-Sherouk Academy, and Canadian International college in Cairo, Egypt. Moreover, he participated in several surveying and transportation projects in Egypt and several structural engineering projects in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Mostafa joined the transportation group at U of A as a graduate research and teaching assistant in Sept. 2014. He has also been involved in several research projects related to traffic safety and connected and autonomous vehicles. Mostafa's research has been presented at several international and national conferences. In addition, he was a member of the planning team of the first connected vehicle test bed in Canada. Mostafa's research interests include traffic microsimulation modelling, connected and autonomous vehicles, intelligent transportation systems, naturalistic driving data, sustainable transportation and traffic safety.

Active in his community, Mostafa has volunteered as a board member of the Institute of Transportation Engineering (ITE) student chapter at U of A and the treasurer of the Egyption Student Association (ESA). Currently, he is a representative of the graduate student on the FGSR council, a member of the GSA Award Selection Committee, and a volunteer in the Office of Sustainability at U of A.

Hongzhi Miao
Hongzhi Miao has been a joint PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Qiu since September 2017. His research interests include intelligent transportation and optimization schedule with applications. He received the B.S. degree in Agricultural and Forestry Economy Management, and the M.S. degree in Applied Statistics from Beijing Forestry University, Beijing, China, in 2014 and 2016, respectively. Andres Rosales
Andres Rosales began his PhD studies at University of Alberta under the supervision of Dr. Tony Qiu in January 2018. He completed his BSc in Electronics Engineering at Universidad Nacional Experimental del Tachira and MSc in Electrical Engineering at Universidad de Guanajuato.
