NSERC Associate Industrial Research Chair in Underground Trenchless Construction

Alireza Bayat, PhD, PEng

Years of research, academic contributions, and industry expertise have led to the establishment of Dr. Alireza Bayat as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Counil of Canada's Associate Industrial Research Chair (NSERC IRC) for Underground Trenchless Construction. With research focused on the rehabilitation and installation of underground infrastructure, this role will allow Dr. Bayat and his team to research innovative ways to revolutionize current construction methods.

In addition to his role as IRC, Dr. Bayat is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta and is the Director of the Consortium for Engineered Trenchless Technologies (CETT), a research initiative at the forefront of trenchless innovations.

Further to leading the University’s team of trenchless researchers, Dr. Bayat has contributed numerous publications to the field, as both author and co-author, and provides consult for large-scale horizontal directional drilling (HDD) projects around the world. He is the co-developer of BoreAid, a revolutionary HDD planning and design tool garnering international recognition and success before being acquired by Vermeer Corporation.

Dr. Bayat is a Ralph Haas/Stantec Fellow in Civil Engineering, an Associate Editior for ASCE Journal of Pipeline Systems Engineering and Practices, the Board Member of the Northwest Chapter of NASTT and the advisor for the University’s Student Chapter. The recipient of many honours and awards, Dr. Bayat was most recently awarded the Faculty of Engineering Research Award and NASTT’s Trent Ralston Young Trenchless Achievement Award.
