ENGL 103 A03: Case Studies in Research: "Frankenstein": Intertextuality and Adaptation

V. Savard:

In this course, students can expect to learn about, and put into practice, various fundamental stages of research while focussing generally on one specific theme. In this section of English 103, we will take an in-depth look at Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818). In dialogue with Shelley’s generative novel, we will consider some of the texts that inspired it and those that it inspired in turn. Frankenstein can be read from myriad perspectives through various lenses, and we will consider several of these. In this class, however, we note how the novel, which was conceived during a ghost story contest, has always been about storytelling.
