ENGL 103 A10: Case Studies in Research: A Creative Research Workshop

T. Wharton

This section of English 103 is an introductory course on Creative Research (also known as Research Creation). We will look at several traditional and contemporary fairy tales in various media, then explore a work inspired by the Western fairy tale tradition, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume of The Lord of the Rings.

Engaging in writing exercises, discussion, and collaborative activities, students will respond creatively and critically to the course texts and learn the stages of academic research creation, including exploratory exercises; formulating an original research question; finding, evaluating, and using secondary sources; and developing one's process of inquiry into a final creative project, with a critical introduction and an annotated bibliography.
