ENGL 103 B26: Case Studies in Research: The Story and the Storyteller

T. Wharton

In this course we will explore the historical and cultural role of the storyteller through the study of selected short stories and novels, including texts by J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula Le Guin, and Thomas King. Engaging in writing exercises, discussion, thought experiments, and collaborative activities, students will learn about and put into practice the stages of academic research creation, including close reading and reflection; identifying an original research question or topic; finding, evaluating, and integrating secondary sources; and developing one's process of thought and inquiry into a finished research project.
