ENGL 103 B09: Case Studies in Research: Raising the Dead: Ghosts and the Supernatural in Literature and Popular Culture

L. Rasmussen

In this class, we will learn about what it means to do research in English studies as we study texts in which a ghost or other metaphysical being serves as the vehicle to interrogate a social problem or historical atrocity. Participants in the course can expect to encounter works set in both past and contemporary contexts, and which variably allow for conversations about relationships, desire, ideology, gender, class, national identity, race and ethnicity to take place. We will include at least one contemporary horror film in our work together, as well as at least one text that examines Indigenous-settler relations in Canada.
