ENGL 209 B1: Reading Histories: Making Readers

D. Gay

Our course will explore case studies in the history of reading selected from a very broad range of time periods. We will examine some theoretical models of reading, and look carefully at how technological inventions have affected reading throughout history, from books in the ancient world to the printing press to social and electronic media. Historical examples will help us to gain a better critical perspective on our own historical moment. Assignments will include collaborative reading and group presentations.
