ENGL 219 X01: Textualities: Narrative Theory and Poetics

K. Ball

This course will provide an introduction to narratology and poetics as illuminated by a range of theoretical and literary texts foregrounding figurations of time, memory, and history. Through a combination of lecture and discussion, we will explore the hermeneutical, psychological, and formal issues that shape different understandings of individual and collective memory, national and postcolonial history, as well as fiction. One of our aims is to compare theories of narrative that have significantly shaped recent developments in literary studies. The course will also provide crucial background for critical approaches to historiography, trauma, and memory politics.
