ENGL 385 B1: Issues in Popular Culture: Social Media Networks

J. Cohn

This course will examine the history and current role of digital social networks within popular culture. Together, we will work out techniques for reading and analyzing the formal aspects of social networks including their interfaces, aesthetics, databases and code. Along with analyzing social networks themselves, we will look at how they are represented in various texts and audiovisual media. We will use these skills to analyze how social networks shape (and are shaped by) broad debates around the role of surveillance, privacy, activism, violence, consumerism, labor, race, gender, nationality, ethnicity, etc. within popular culture.
