ENGL 344 A1: Early Modern Literature and Culture: Milton

D. Gay

Our course will explore the career of John Milton, examining his early development as a poet and note his achievements as a prose writer engaged in political controversy. We will spend several weeks on his epic poem Paradise Lost, the greatest non-dramatic poem of the early modern period. Milton is an exceptionally rich resource for students interested in biblical literature, classical literature and mythology, Reformation theology, and literary and political history.
