WRITE 398 C1: Intermediate Creative Writing: Nonfiction

T. Bishop

We will be reading essays by some of the major voices in the genre, and some emerging voices; however, the main text will be your writing. This is a workshop, not a lecture course, and part of every class will be devoted to discussion of your prose.

There will be exercises in style, designed to expand your syntactic repertoire, and studies in the techniques of creative non-fiction, from dialogue to characterization to how to construct a narrative arc.

We will discuss the techniques of writing for publication, from drafting the query letter to preparing the typescript for submission. One aim of the course will be to enable each student to submit a short piece to a magazine or literary journal, and there will be guest lectures by local writers and publishers.
