FS 201 A1: Film History I

The course is an introduction to the development of film as an art form and consists of a survey of film history from its beginning in the late 19th century up to 1950. As an introduction to global film history this course will illustrate a variety of approaches to filmmaking underscoring the argument that Hollywood productions are only one version of filmmaking among many. The goal of this course is to present some of the key films, filmmakers, film movements, genres, and film techniques that are critical to a basic understanding of film history.
