Research

Research in the Department of English and Film Studies (EFS) embraces a wide array of scholarly explorations dedicated to the understanding, elucidation, and production of literary and cultural texts, broadly conceived. Our increasingly-diverse research activities examine manuscripts, life writing, dictionaries, newspapers, magazines, and popular print; moving images (film and video, from their mechanical origins to their pervasive popularity in the digital present); and media technologies, whether residual, established, or emergent. Our research takes us into libraries and archives, but also into the classroom and the community.

EFS's research strengths span the full spectrum of literary periods, people, and places-from Shakespearean performance history to avant-garde Indigenous poetics, from seventeenth-century lexicography to twenty-first-century Guantánamo survivor narratives. Our research continues to distinguish the department globally as an incubator of exciting and highly-regarded work, published and presented in venues around the world. As key contributors to a large research-intensive university and a renowned Faculty of Arts, and with direct access to Canada's second-largest academic library system, many of our faculty, students, and post-doctoral fellows are also immersed in new and rapidly-evolving spheres of inquiry that continue to transform both the department and the discipline. Scholars in EFS pursue ground-breaking research across four broad zones of inquiry:
