Black Solidarity is a Black History Month Panel discussion event that will explore solidarity as a tool for opportunity and resistance. It will feature Dr Andrea A. Davis, a Professor in the Department of Humanities at York University, and Academic Convenor of the 2023 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences to be held at York and Michael A. Bucknor, Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair Nominee in English and Film Studies at the University of Alberta. This panel will be moderated by Dr C.J. Bogle and is offered by the Black Graduate Students' Association at the University of Alberta.

About the Panelists

Andrea A. Davis

Dr Andrea A. Davis is a Professor in the Department of Humanities at York University, and Academic Convenor of the 2023 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences to be held at York. Prior to this role, she was Special Advisor on the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies’ Anti-Black Racism Strategy. A former Canadian commonwealth scholar, Dr. Davis earned a BA in English and Spanish Literatures (first class honors) from the University of the West Indies (Mona campus) and MA and PhD degrees in English at York University.

Michael A. Bucknor

Michael A. Bucknor is Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair Nominee in English and Film Studies at the University of Alberta. Formerly, he was Chair of the Department of Literatures in English and Public Orator for the Mona Campus at the University of the West Indies (UWI), in Jamaica. He was former Chair of the Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (ACLALS), currently serves on the editorial boards of several journals and is Senior Editor of the Journal of West Indian Literature. He has published widely and carries out research on the African Diaspora, Austin Clarke, Caribbean-Canadian writing, Black Canadian cultural production, postcolonial literatures and theory, masculinities, sexualities, and popular culture.
