Let's Celebrate

September 23, 2022

Green + Gold Day is our annual school spirit event celebrating the people who make the U of A the amazing, innovative community that it is — students, faculty, staff and alumni. Wear your gear, join us in Quad for games and bring your best cheer for the pep rally. There is something for everyone to show your spirit!

Main Quad 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Come down to Quad to try your hand at some carnival games and win prizes! Visit the food tent in Quad wearing your green and gold, and get a free hot dog (while quantities last).

No green and gold gear? No problem! Come and find your perfect fit. The U of A Bookstore’s annual sale will be available in Quad (while quantities last!)

Dodging Hunger — Food Bank Donations

Bring a non-perishable food item or cash donation to support the Campus Food Bank. Find the collection station at the Green + Gold information tent.

Pep Rally 12 - 12:30 p.m.

It might be short, but the Green and Gold Day Pep Rally will be a grand celebration, complete with swag giveaways, trivia contests, Guba and Patches, and more!

Roaming Trivia Stations

Watch around campus for our trivia stations (wagons) for your chance to learn about U of A history and win a prize.

Get in the Green & Gold Spirit!

Start the day by wearing your gear and decorating your work space in green and gold. Share it on social media (and be sure to tag us @UAlberta) to show your U of A spirit!

Working remotely? Try out a Green + Gold Day virtual background to show your spirit on your video calls.

Why Green and Gold?

The University of Alberta has been the home of green and gold since Oct. 13, 1908. That's the day the university's Senate (which used to function like our modern day Board of Governors) officially adopted the colours — all based on the suggestion of Marion Kirby Alexander. The green represents the wide stretches of prairie land flanked by deep spruce forests and symbolizes hope and optimism. The gold represents the golden harvest fields and symbolizes the light of knowledge. Plus, take a look at the river valley in the fall—it's all green and gold!
