Let's Celebrate

September 14 - 18, 2021

Green and Gold Days is the U of A's premier school spirit event, celebrating the people who make the U of A the vibrant, involved and innovative community that it is — students, faculty, staff and alumni. Although the format will be different again this year, the spirit of lifting each other up remains more essential than ever.

Green and Gold Day

Why Green and Gold?

The University of Alberta has been the home of green and gold since Oct. 13, 1908. That's the day the university's Senate (which used to function like our modern day Board of Governors) officially adopted the colours — all based on the suggestion of Marion Kirby Alexander. The green represents the wide stretches of prairie land flanked by deep spruce forests and symbolizes hope and optimism. The gold represents the golden harvest fields and symbolizes the light of knowledge. Plus, take a look at the river valley in the fall—it's all green and gold!
