An Evening with Nobel Laureate Michael Houghton

University of Alberta virologist Michael Houghton spent more than a decade hunting a virus responsible for causing cirrhosis and cancer of the liver in people around the world. 

In recognition of his discovery of the hepatitis C virus, Houghton will be awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Join Bill Flanagan, President and Vice-Chancellor, and Brenda Hemmelgarn, Dean, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, as we celebrate and honour Michael Houghton, Director, Li Ka Shing Applied Virology Institute.

Houghton will talk about this momentous discovery and the hepatitis C virus vaccine he and his team at Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology have developed that is now in the late pre-clinical stage of testing. Houghton is also leading an effort to produce a vaccine for COVID-19.
