Confidence To Move Up
Investing in business education paid off for Christopher Tom
Christopher Tom was quite happy with the first job he got after graduating from a Bachelor of Arts program. Working as a driver for DATS (Disabled Adult Transit Service), he felt privileged to be part of a very special and much-needed service. “I loved the clients and the support that we provided to them,” he says. Then one day a PD event he attended reminded him of how much he used to enjoy his university days. “I remember thinking, oh yeah, this is something I really like doing.” That eureka moment led him to enrol in the Management Development Certificate. The classes helped quench his thirst for learning and had a bonus side effect: from then on, it was one promotion after another for Christopher.
The knowledge and credential acquired through the program were an important part of the mix fueling his career’s take-off. “The classes open your eyes to other perspectives and allow you to become more well-rounded, to make better judgement calls,” he says. Equally important, however, was the confidence he built during his studies: “Participating in discussions with supervisors and managers allowed me to see that I could work on the same level as them.”
A few drivers in Christopher’s workplace have approached him, wondering how he got to his position so fast. His answer to them is to recommend the Management Development Certificate: “If you’re looking to move up, it’s a great first step.”
“The instructors are very knowledgeable and bring real-world experiences to the classes.”
