Every day the world becomes more connected through technology, trade, humanitarian work, and shared environmental resources. Strong leadership is an increasingly needed asset, the kind of leadership that can galvanize members from different cultures to respond to a common goal.
The Certificate in Global Leadership from Online and Continuing Education at the University of Alberta has been designed to empower leaders with the capacity for a global mindset and an ability to lead in multicultural settings. Learners in this online program will focus on topics such as world views, political and cultural complexity, cross-cultural communication, deliberative discourse, and technological changes.
This certificate will be of value to individuals interested in working within a global context and developing leadership skills to draw cultures closer together. Learners come from a variety of industries, volunteer organizations, government sector, and small to large enterprises.

Only interested in taking a course? You can register for a course without applying and enrolling in the program – browse our Global Leadership courses. If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course you’ve taken will be applied toward your Certificate as long as it is still part of the program plan at the time of your application. Please note, program requirements are subject to change over time.
This part-time program is comprised of three core courses offered online and self-paced. Each course is equivalent to 39 hours, for a total of 117 instructional hours. Most students choose to complete the certificate requirements within one to two years.
A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the citation.
We highly recommend that courses are completed in the following order:

Apply for Your Credential
To qualify for program completion you are required to submit a request to obtain your credential. For a breakdown of details and how to qualify, visit the program completion page.
- An application fee of $100 is required for admission into the program.
- Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you register for your classes.
- Courses are GST-exempt.
- Eligible for the Canada-Alberta Job Grant.
