As organizations continue to operate in an increasingly competitive and global marketplace, current and aspiring information technology managers must be well prepared to make significant contributions required for success. They need to understand what information systems can and cannot do and be able to use them to help accomplish organizational goals.

Designed in consultation with IT experts, business managers, and industry leaders, the Information Technology Management Certificate builds on the skills needed to integrate information technology into business and business into information technology. Strategic planning, managing IT resources, analyzing business information systems, and management principles are all a key part of this highly effective certificate program.

Participants in this program often have a background in information technology and wish to move into management, or they have a management background and want to gain a better understanding of how to manage information technology resources within their organizations. Students from all sectors (government, industry, not-for-profit organizations, or small to large enterprise) have completed this career-enhancing program to build relevant skills.

Program Plan

This part-time program is comprised of four core courses and 156 hours in electives for a total of 312 instructional hours. Typical course load is one to two courses per term, three terms a year. When following this structure, most students are able to fulfill the certificate requirements within two to three years. 

Courses do not have to be completed in any specific order, allowing students to choose the courses that best fit their schedule in any given term. Evening and weekend learning opportunities are available to accommodate a variety of schedules.

A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the certificate (3.5 or higher earns a certificate with distinction).


The requirements below apply to students enrolled in and after July 2017. If you entered the program prior to July 2017, please refer to the requirements that apply to your certificate.

  • Elective courses (156 hours)

    Choose a minimum of 156 hours in electives.

    Electives can be taken at any time during the program, provided that the appropriate prerequisites have been met.


Many of the electives are also part of other programs, such as professional development series in Project Management, Change Management, Business Analytics and Business Strategy. Some of the electives are also part of the Advanced Certificate in Leadership.

Qualifications & Admission

Enrolling in the program is a requirement if you want to obtain the certificate. You may apply for admission as you start your studies or, if you prefer, after you have taken one or more courses.

We are open to students with a variety of educational and professional backgrounds. Our expectation is that you have a commitment to learn and achieve your continuing education goals.

    Effective July 1, 2018 if you or your company are members of Circle For Aboriginal Relations (CFAR), the admission application fee into this program will be waived. Please identify on the form admission form that you or your company are members (this will be verified).

Tuition & Fees

  • A one-time application fee of $100 is required for admission into the program.
  • Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you register for your classes; courses are GST-exempt.
  • Some courses require a textbook at an additional cost.

Courses Offered

You can register for a course without enrolling in the program. If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course(s) you’ve taken will be applied toward your certificate.
