Overview

When it comes to technology and business, change is the name of the game. Every day technologies are born and die out, while businesses are constantly adjusting course to navigate today’s ever-changing economy. For managers in the information systems industry, being able to keep pace with current developments and knowing how to anticipate future trends are crucial skills. 

The Information Technology Management Certificate program from the Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta, is based on an understanding that organizational effectiveness depends on how managers acquire, organize, and use information. Designed in consultation with information technology practitioners, business managers, and industry experts, the program focuses on building the skills needed to effectively integrate information technology into the business environment, covering areas such as strategic planning, managing IT resources, business and systems analysis, and management principles.

Audience

Participants in this program often have a background in information technology and wish to move into management, or they have a management background and want to gain a better understanding of how to manage information technology resources within their organizations. Students from all sectors (government, industry, not-for-profit organizations, or small to large enterprise) have completed this career-enhancing program to build relevant skills.

Program Plan


This part-time program is comprised of four core courses and 156 hours in electives for a total of 312 instructional hours. Typical course load is one to two courses per term, three terms a year. When following this structure, most students are able to fulfill the certificate requirements within two to three years. 

Courses do not have to be completed in any specific order, allowing students to choose the courses that best fit their schedule in any given term. Evening and weekend learning opportunities are available to accommodate a variety of schedules.

A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the certificate (3.5 or higher earns a certificate with distinction).

The requirements below apply to students enrolled in and after July 2017. If you entered the program prior to July 2017, please refer to the requirements that apply to your certificate.

  • Elective courses (156 hours)

    Choose a minimum of 156 hours in electives.

    Electives can be taken at any time during the program, provided that the appropriate prerequisites have been met.

Transferability

Many of the electives are also part of other programs, such as professional development series in Project Management, Change Management, Business Analytics and Business Strategy. Some of the electives are also part of the Advanced Certificate in Leadership.

Qualifications & Admission

Enrolling in the program is a requirement if you want to obtain the certificate. You may apply for admission as you start your studies or, if you prefer, after you have taken one or more courses.

Tuition & Fees

  • A one-time application fee of $100 is required for admission into the program.
  • Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you register for your classes; courses are GST-exempt.
  • Some courses require a textbook at an additional cost.

You can register for a course without enrolling in the program. If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course(s) you’ve taken will be applied toward your certificate.
