Course Registration FAQs

  • Am I able to register if there is a course prerequisite?

Course prerequisites can be found in the course description.

Students registering in courses for which a prerequisite is listed must meet the prerequisite requirements. A grade of D is the minimum grade acceptable in a course which is to be used as a prerequisite. (Please note: Students must obtain a cumulative program GPA of 2.0 to be eligible for graduation).

Prerequisite requirements may be waived with the written approval of the program that offers the course. Students who are unsure that they meet the prerequisite requirements in a course, or who wish to obtain permission to have prerequisite waived, should consult the program offering the course.

The Faculty of Extension may cancel the registration of students in courses offered by the departments who do not meet the prerequisite requirements as stated in the course description.

  • What types of course offerings are available?

There are several types of course offerings available through the Faculty of Extension:

Face to Face (in-person):  These "traditional" classes may take place in downtown Edmonton, AB at Enterprise Square, University of Alberta Campus or at other locations across the province (check course descriptions for details). Any face-to-face class may be web-enhanced , requiring access to online course materials via eClass.

Synchronous: These online courses feature a real-time, virtual classroom element, where students and instructors 'attend' scheduled online lectures, and interact at the same time. For these virtual classroom sessions, students will require a computer with both audio input and output (such as a microphone-equipped headset). Access to the online component is provided through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.

Asynchronous: A flexible online experience, where you will move through the course material and activities at the same pace as the rest of the class. There are no real-time virtual classroom sessions to attend. Access to the online component is provided through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.

Self-Paced Asynchronous: A flexible online learning experience where you work through the course materials and activities at your own pace, within a specified time frame. There are no real-time virtual classroom sessions to attend. Access to the online component is provided through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.

Blended Learning: Blended learning courses combine face-to-face and online learning.  Online activities and course requirements may occur prior to, during, and/or after the scheduled face-to-face time.  Access to the online component is provided through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.

Web-Enhanced: Many courses offered by the Faculty of Extension may be web-enhanced, requiring student access to a computer and the internet.  Web-Enhanced courses include online access to some learning materials such as readings, resources, links, discussions, etc. Access to the online component is provided through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.

Pre/Post Assignment: Some classes may have an assignment(s) due before or after your in-class learning component. If courses have a pre and/or post assignments, there will a note on your Fee Assessment/Course Confirmation notices. Further information will be communicated to you via your UofA email account and/or eClass. Access to the online component is provided through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.

Please check each individual class to see which course type will be offered to ensure it meets your learning needs.
