Series Overview

The Planning for Diverse Environments series will provide you with expertise in planning communities in the areas of urban, rural, regional, and winter environments.

Led by industry experts, the courses encourage learners to collaborate with other planning professionals who bring their prior experience for dynamic discussions and practical hands-on activities.

If you are a registered professional planner with the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI), you may use these courses as part of the required Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) units for your membership maintenance.

This series is for you if you are a learner working within the planning industry.

Learners may come from a wide range of sectors, ranging from development officers, planning technicians, land use, environmental, and community planners, to resources managers, government officials, consultants, developers, lawyers, zoning administrators, administrators in smaller municipalities, and others involved in planning processes. 

Program Plan

This series is comprised of two online courses and two in-class/web-enhanced courses held in downtown Edmonton, each of them designed to stand alone in providing specific skills. Courses can also be taken together to provide you with a comprehensive skill set.

Once three of the courses have been successfully completed, you can request an official Planning for Diverse Environments series Notice of Completion.


All courses count for elective credit toward the Applied Land Use Planning certificate program.

Qualifications & Admission

There are no prerequisites or entrance requirements to take the courses in the series. Some background knowledge in planning may be helpful. Courses may be completed individually or within the series.

Tuition & Fees

  • Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you register for each course.
  • Textbooks (when required) are purchased separately.
  • This program is eligible for the Canada-Alberta Job Grant.
