Overview

Concern for health and safety in the workplace is increasing among workers and employers across all industries. One of the most advanced programs in Canada, the University of Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Certificate is designed to help practitioners from many different backgrounds develop competencies for effective development, implementation, and evaluation of health and safety programs in a wide variety of occupational settings. 

UAlberta’s OHS program provides an opportunity for practising occupational health and safety professionals, as well as those who aspire for a career in health and safety, to advance their skill set and to assist employers in continuously improving safety performance.

This part-time program is offered in flexible and accessible formats and taught by industry experts in downtown Edmonton, Calgary, and across Alberta through partnerships with local colleges. Students may also fulfill all program requirements through online courses.

Audience

This program is for practicing professionals seeking an educational credential recognized by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP) and those aspiring to have an impactful career in workplace health and safety, including: safety technicians, officers, advisors, specialists, coordinators, supervisors, consultants, educators, trainers, and administrators. 

Our students come from diverse sectors, including oil and gas, aviation, construction, education, health care, manufacturing, municipalities, mining, forestry, and government agencies.

Continuing professional development for AMHSA, APEGA, CHRP, CHSC, CRBOH, ABIH, CRSP, and MSO members – we help you fulfill your requirements.

CHSC, NCSO, HSA, MSO, QSR, and RMHSA designation holders: you may be eligible to receive a 21-hour credit toward our seminar requirement.

Career opportunities

Our graduates are employed in a variety of positions in a wide range of industry sectors, including private businesses, government agencies, and labour groups.

Alumni from the program include environmental health officers, public health inspectors, construction and production foremen and supervisors, maintenance superintendents, industrial hygienists, occupational health nurses, engineering and instrument technicians, and chemical technologists.

The program can be entirely completed through online courses. For those who prefer in-class delivery, courses are also available in Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Grande Prairie, and Medicine Hat – view location details.

Program Plan


The Occupational Health and Safety Certificate program is comprised of six core courses, two electives, and 35 hours of enrichment seminars. Designed for part-time study, it can generally be completed within one to three years, but students have up to six years to fulfill their program requirements. 

Formats and schedules are flexible and designed to accommodate the diverse needs of our students.

A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the certificate (3.5 or higher earns a certificate with distinction).

While it is recommended that students begin their program with EXOS 4620 - Introduction to Health & Safety (foundation course), they can complete the courses in any order provided the noted prerequisite(s) have been met.

    Choose 3 to 5 seminars for a minimum of 35 hours.

Transferability

If you have completed a course from a recognized post-secondary institution within the last five years that is applicable to the OHS program (view our list of transferable courses), you may request an exemption by completing the Transfer Credit Request form. 

Exemptions are limited to a maximum of three courses or, in the case of students receiving 21 hours toward the “Enrichment Seminar” requirement, to a maximum of two courses plus the industry training credit.

Qualifications & Admission

Enrolling in the program is a requirement if you want to earn the certificate. You may apply for admission as you start your studies or, if you prefer, after you have taken one or more courses. 

To enrol, you must have a minimum of a high school diploma (or equivalent) and two years of relevant work experience. If you attended high school in Alberta, transcripts may be ordered from Alberta Education at 780-427-5732; for high schools outside of Alberta, contact the corresponding provincial department of education.

  2. Obtain an official transcript of your previous studies (high school OR post-secondary education).
  3. Submit your completed application, along with the transcript and a $100 admission fee.

Tuition & Fees

  • A one-time application fee of $100 is required for admission into the program.
  • Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you register for your classes; courses are GST-exempt.
  • Some courses require a textbook at an additional cost (view our textbook list). Books can be purchased or ordered from the University of Alberta Bookstore (Edmonton) or the Mount Royal Bookstore (Calgary). 
  • Additional course materials for online, blended, and web-enhanced courses will be available in eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool, at no extra charge.
  • We have scholarships and awards available to our certificate students.

Courses Offered

You can register for a course without enrolling in the program. If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course(s) you’ve taken will be applied toward your certificate. Alternatively, you may opt for auditing a course, in which case you will not be evaluated for any coursework — audited courses, however, cannot be applied toward the certificate at any time.

The program can be entirely completed through online courses; for those who prefer in-class delivery, courses are available in downtown Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Grande Prairie, and Medicine Hat. Face-to-face courses are available in the daytime, evening, and weekends. The program also offers condensed-format courses held over a period of four days, two weekends, or three weekends.
