Power outages often accompany emergencies such as severe weather or floods. An outage can last for minutes or days.

In a power outage

  • Notify the University Control Centre (780-492-5555).
  • Stop work and turn off non-essential equipment (e.g., small appliances, computers, printers, etc.) to facilitate re-energizing of buildings.
  • If safety is a concern, exit the building. Do not use elevators. Assist others as required.
  • Turn off light switches and small appliances as you leave in case the power is restored.

If you are in a laboratory at the time of an outage

  • Turn off heat sources, secure chemicals, and close fume hood sash. Keep refrigerator or freezer door closed.

If you are trapped in an elevator

  • Try to stay calm.
  • Use the elevator phone or your personal device to call the Control Centre (780-492-5555), Protective Services (780-492-5050), or the elevator company.
  • Do not attempt to open the doors or the roof panel. Wait for emergency responders.

Be prepared for an outage

  • Make a point of identifying evacuation routes and muster points.
