Shelter in Place
In an emergency, you may be told to “shelter in place,” a precautionary measure to keep you in a safe indoor location. You may be told to shelter in place during a large hazardous chemical release, to avoid violent crime, or when safe evacuation is not possible.
If you are instructed to shelter in place
- Enter the nearest building if you are not already indoors
- Close and lock exterior doors and windows
- Turn off fans, heating and air conditioning systems
- Monitor university social media and website for updates and instructions
Be prepared to shelter in place
- Spend a few moments evaluating your workplace, classroom, or other places you frequent; identify spots that could provide shelter if needed
