Faculty, Administrative Professional, Faculty Service Officer and Librarian

Benefit Eligibility

A staff member appointed full-time or part-time (0.40 FTE or greater) under the Faculty, Administrative Professional Officer, Faculty Service Officer or Librarian agreements is eligible to participate in the benefits.

A staff member appointed full-time or part-time (0.40 FTE or greater) is eligible to participate in the benefits. 

Faculty Service Officer

A staff member appointed full-time or part-time (0.40 FTE or greater) is eligible to participate in the benefits.

Librarian

A staff member appointed full-time or part-time (0.40 FTE or greater) is eligible to participate in the benefits.

Benefit Costs

The cost of your pension and benefit plans makes up a significant portion of your total compensation as an employee of the University of Alberta. The costs of benefits in addition to paid salary are approximately 20% of salary for Academic Staff. Supplementary Health Care Medical services such as prescription drugs, medical services not covered under Alberta Health Care, paramedical, vision, etc. Drugs are billed directly to the Plan. Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) Comprehensive psychological counseling, wellness and work life services (e.g. legal and financial consultations). Human Solutions is the service provider for the University

Health Spending Account Reimbursement of additional health and dental expenses not eligible under the employee’s other benefit plans. Annual allocation of $750 per calendar year per staff member. Credit carry-forward for one year of unused allocation.

Long Term Disability Loss of income in the event of a long-term disability. Benefit is 70% of salary and is considered taxable income. The University’s Health and Wellness Administration initiates the claim process. Application for benefits occurs after 26 weeks elimination period. Coverage ceases June 30th following 65th birthday.

Life Insurance Basic Provides a lump sum to the designated beneficiary(ies) in the event of death $100,000 flat coverage amount. The University’s Pension & Benefit Advisory Services unit would initiate and submit the claim on behalf of the beneficiary(ies)

Optional Life  Additional life insurance can be purchased in units of $10,000 up to $500,000. Evidence of Insurability required for amounts over $180,000 or on total principal if late applicant. An application is required.

Critical Illness $10,000 lump sum benefit paid to the employee in the event of diagnosis of a covered disease.

Spousal Critical Illness Spousal critical illness insurance can be purchased in increments of $25,000 to a maximum of $300,000. Lump sum benefit paid to the employee if the spouse is diagnosed with a covered disease. Evidence of Insurability is required for amounts greater than $25,000 or on total principal if late applicant.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment Additional insurance in the event of accidental death or a permanent dismemberment. Application required. Employee only or family coverage available. The University’s Pension and Benefit Advisory Services would assist with the claims process.

Business Travel Provides additional coverage for accidental death or bodily injury which occurs while travelling on business for the University. Principal Sum of $100,000. Portion of the Principal Sum is payable as outlined in the Benefits Coverage below

Universities Academic Pension Plan (UAPP) Defined benefit pension plan which provides retirement and survivor income replacement.

Academic Supplementary Retirement Plan (ASRP) A defined contribution retirement benefit in addition to the UAPP for members with annual pensionable salary exceeding the annual UAPP salary cap.
