Dental Care

The Dental Care plan covers you and your eligible dependents for services that maintain or restore healthy teeth and gums.

Reimbursement

The university dental coverage is provided by Sun Life. Reimbursement of eligible expenses are based on the Sun Life Dental Fee Guide. If your dentist charges more than the current guide, you will need to cover the additional costs yourself. Visit the Making a Claim page to learn more.

Making the most of your dental benefits

Generally, all eligible expenses are billed directly to the benefit plan and any residual fees are billed directly to the claimant. Discuss fees with your dentist before you receive the treatment to understand whether you need to pay any additional charges. If so, you can choose to either negotiate a better price, get a cost estimate to compare with other dental clinics, or agree to pay the extra fees.

If you are given a choice of two or more covered dental procedures that are separately suitable for your dental condition, the dental plan will cover the least expensive service.

If you are prescribed orthodontics or if you are recommended a procedure costing over $500, your dental office should submit a treatment plan to Sun Life to find out what expenses are covered by the plan. This way, you and your dentist will know what procedures are eligible under your group plan and can discuss your next steps. The dental claim form must be submitted to Sun Life.

Co-ordination of benefits

There are certain rules that govern the reimbursement of claims when both you and your spouse have benefit coverage with your respective employers. Visit the Co-ordination of Benefits page to learn more.
