EDI Awards Breakfast

The EDI Awards celebrates groups or individuals who have gone above and beyond to demonstrate the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in activities that support the University’s mission to: “value diversity, inclusivity, and equity across and among our people, campuses, and disciplines”.

Welcome and Opening Remarks:  Ayaz Bhanji, President, University of Alberta Alumni Association

Bio: Having graduated from Pharmacy at the U of A in 1991, Ayaz is a Pharmacist by profession, and has an MBA from Athabasca University. He has served two terms as President of the Ismaili Council for Edmonton and was the Co-Chair of the Joint Liaison Committee of the Council for Edmonton and University of Alberta. 

He has held previous positions as Honorary Secretary – Council for Edmonton, Member for Communications and Publications and Chairman of the Youth and Sports Board. He has also served as a Board Member and Vice President of the Alberta Pharmacists Association.

Ayaz was born in Uganda and came to Canada in 1972. He is a successful entrepreneur in Alberta and currently is Broker/Owner of RE/MAX Excellence, and a Senior Partner of EPC Capital Ltd, and Edmonton based development company. His agency employs over 140 Associates and Staff and is the largest RE/MAX office in Edmonton. Ayaz has been inducted into the RE/MAX International Hall of Fame, RE/MAX Chairman’s Club and his Commercial Team is #1 for RE/MAX in Edmonton, and Top 5 Worldwide for 2016.

On a personal note, Ayaz participates in many charitable organizations, including the Children’s Miracle Network and the Realtor’s Community Foundation and volunteers a great deal of his time to various worthwhile causes. He has three children and loves to travel, play golf, hockey and volleyball.

Dr. Michelle LeBaron, Eyes on the Storm: Finding Ways through Intercultural Conflict

Time: 10:00 am—4:00 pm

On today's campuses, it sometimes seems as if intercultural understanding is declining and intercultural conflict is thriving. The ways we resolve conflicts differ greatly across cultures, genders, even across generations. Whatever issue sparks a conflict, the methods we use for resolving it can often escalate the problem. In this experiential workshop, we will explore dynamics between culture and conflict in a variety of campus and community contexts, and learn ways to analyze what is happening. With cultural fluency as a resource, we will deepen our capacities to negotiate, while developing proficiency at noticing cultural biases in conflict engagement processes themselves. We will also examine the roles of worldviews in intercultural conflicts, and explore how physical, emotional and spiritual resources can assist in engaging them. Participants will have opportunities to work on real issues, and to apply creative and arts-based tools in collaboration with colleagues. 

Bio: Michelle LeBaron is a scholar/practitioner and Professor of Law and Dispute Resolution at the Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia, Canada. Her most recent book is Changing Our Worlds: Art as Transformative Practice. One of the pioneers of the field of intercultural conflict engagement, Michelle applies unique perspectives from the arts and her work on worldview conflicts in diverse regions to teach about dispute system design and conflict engagement.

Keynote Presentation: Colin Allen, President, World Federation of the Deaf
World Federation of the Deaf: Impacts on EDI

The 2019 EDI Week Keynote Presentation will be delivered by Colin Allen, President of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and past Chair of the International Disability Alliance (IDA).  As an international human rights champion and as a deaf person who has used Australian Sign Language (Auslan) since birth, Colin will share his journey to advance the human rights of deaf people, and more broadly people with disability, for over 40 years in the political, professional and social realm. His international work includes engagement with the UN System and the delivery of presentations and workshops in more than 70 countries on human rights issues for both the Deaf Community and persons with disability. The Presentation will be followed by a question and answer period. 

Colin has been President of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) since 2011 having been involved since 2003 as a board member. Colin is also past Chair of the International Disability Alliance (IDA). In these roles, he has guided and represented WFD and IDA in their engagement with the UN System and other international human rights and international development organisations. Colin has addressed international and national conferences as a keynote presenter and has presented workshops on issues related to human rights for both the Deaf Community and persons with disability in more than 70 countries.

Intersectionality: What is it and why does it matter?

In the Fall of 2018, Research at the Intersections of Gender (RIG) was named as one of the University of Alberta’s first three Signature Areas of research and teaching.  Intersections of gender impacts everyone at the university and beyond.  They are our identities, formed at the intersections of race, Indigeneity, class, gender, language, location, (dis)ability, age, religion, and more.  They are the complexities of who we are and the differences in how each of us experience the world around us.

The RIG team is excited to introduce the signature area and the concept of intersectionality to you through the viewing and discussion of a seminal TED Talk lecture by Dr.  Kimberlé Crenshaw, who first coined the term. We will explore how it relates to your individual jobs, work teams, and/or learning environment and we will seek input on how intersections of gender impact all roles at the university.

Bios:

Dr. Susanne Luhmann is Director of RIG, as well as an Associate Professor and former Chair in the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. Susanne was one of four Principal Investigators on the same-named RIG KIAS-funded project, and was recognized along with this team as AWA Women of the Year in 2018. Susanne has research interests that traverse a number of topics and fields, including trauma and cultural memory, queer and feminist pedagogy, sexuality studies, and the (ongoing) formation of academic Women's and Gender Studies. Susanne's guiding philosophy in shaping RIG is to work towards a RIG that the University of Alberta and wider communities envision. Most recently, Susanne has been developing a rich array of RIG programming, including a research collaboration workshop.

Dr. Dia Da Costa is Associate Director of RIG and a Professor of Social Justice and International Studies in the Faculty of Education. She is trained in various traditions of social theory and research received on three different continents, and brings this transnational lens to questioning the power inherent in 'development', nationalism, and colonialism. Her recent research focuses on the ways in which South Asian communities in Canada name, challenge, and reproduce colonial state violence. Most recently, Dia has been at the forefront of developing new RIG programs such as the intersectionality reading group>BIPoC student mentoring group.

Introduction to the new EDI Employee Census Survey

Description: The development of a new EDI Census Survey for employees fulfills the first Benchmark for Excellence in the institutional EDI strategic plan launched on February 13, 2019.  Join members of the EDI Census Survey working group for an overview of the process to develop the tool, become familiar with the specific questions, and engage in discussion about the new survey scheduled to be launched Spring 2019.

EDI Networks and Services Resource Fair

Engaging Cognitive Diversity in the Workplace with Dr. Jacqueline Pei and Aamena Kapasi

Description: Leading researchers will deliver an overview of cognitive diversity.  Through a specific focus on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD), they will present key themes in supporting success in individuals with disability.  Following the research presentation, a panel of campus professionals, with expertise in managing disabilities in the workplace, will explore ways to create welcoming and supportive environments for individuals whose patterns of behaviours may cause barriers to working and learning.  Attend this session to unpack and advance awareness of cognitive diversity! 

Bio: Jacqueline Pei (R. Psych., PhD) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology and Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta. Also a practicing Registered Psychologist for the past fifteen years, Dr Pei began her career as a criminologist and forensic counselor working with incarcerated youth. Motivated by this early work, she returned to academia to study youth at risk, child development, and neuropsychology, leading to her current focus on interventions for individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Building on her work with various community and government agencies, Dr Pei currently leads the Intervention Network Action Team (iNAT) for the Canada FASD Research Network a role that facilitates the link between research, policy, and practice.

Bio: Aamena Kapasi is a fourth year PhD student in School and Clinical Child Psychology at the University of Alberta. Aamena has a passion for both research and clinical work with children, youth, and families. Aamena's research is focused on supports and interventions for individuals with FASD. Over the past year and a half Aamena has worked on a project specifically exploring employment for individuals with FASD.

The Poetics of Visual Language: Deaf Performance in Action by Chris Dodd and Jolanta Lapiak

Time: 12 pm to 1 pm 

Location:Arts-based Research Studio Department of Secondary Education 4-104 Education North 

Description:An engaging showcase of the Deaf performing arts featuring a blend of modern dramatic arts, along with storytelling, ASL poetry and mixed multi-media. Join local Deaf performers Chris Dodd, Jolanta Lapiak and special guests for an event that demonstrates the evocative power of American Sign Language in performance. The show includes rich and multilayered ASL poetry and Deaf performance art by Lapiak and an excerpt from Dodd's play, "Deafy", a tragicomedy featuring Nathan Jesper, a professional public speaker, who relays stories of his daily misfortunes of being a Deaf man. This event will feature an opportunity for open discourse following the performances where the audience can engage with the performers and learn more about Deaf culture and performance.

This event will be ASL/English accessible.

Bio: Jolanta Lapiak is an Ameslan (American Sign Language) literary and media artist, artivist, narrator, and poet in multimedia: video, performance art, photography, digital art and/or text. Born and raised multiculturally, Jolanta had lived in multiple cities in Canada and the U.S. and Europe. She has presented, exhibited, and performed nationally and internationally. She loves travelling aboard. Her works explore artistic and literary elements in ASL, grammatology (art/science of writing) and various ways of writing/speaking (both in ASL) with a unique blend of cinematic vocabulary, lingual choreography, written/spoken calligraphy, poetry, and storytelling techniques, using ASL. Some of her works challenge as well as deconstruct phonocentric traditions of textuality and poetry. Her works are inspired by Japanese art (calligraphy, specifically).

Bio: Chris Dodd is a Deaf performing artist and playwright. He is the founder and artistic director of Canada’s national theatre showcase dedicated to the Deaf performing arts, SOUND OFF: A Deaf Theatre Festival, which is done in collaboration with Workshop West Playwrights’ Theatre. He is an artistic associate with Workshop West and is one of their Playwrights in Development. Recent writing credits include “Alicia and the Machine” which was commissioned by Concrete Theatre for the 2017 edition of Spouts New Play Festival for Kids and upcoming writing credits include his new work in development, "Deafy". Recent performing credits include "Queen Seraphina and the Land of Vertebraat" with Saskatoon's Sum Theatre, "Gravity" with Theatre Yes, and “Ultrasound” with Toronto's Theatre Passe Muraille, where he assisted with the creation of the Deaf Artists and Theatres Toolkit (DATT), which is dedicated to engaging Deaf audiences and performers within professional theatres. Chris holds a BA (honors) degree from the University of Alberta’s Drama program.
