Healthy University Strategic Plan

In 2015, a steering committee and working group were established with representation from Human Resource Services, Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation, and the Office of the Dean of Students to develop a healthy university strategic plan aligned with Objective 19 in For the Public Good. Student and staff representatives also participated in the working group. The health-promoting university philosophy was used as a model for the strategy.

 

Health-promoting universities concern themselves with four key goals:

 

  1. Fostering healthy working, learning and living environments for students, faculty and staff.
  2. Embedding health in all aspects of teaching, research and knowledge exchange across the university.
  3. Contributing to the health of the wider community.
  4. Evaluating and building evidence of effectiveness and sharing learning.

The Healthy University Strategic Plan (HUSP) is focused on Goal One

 

Goal: Foster a healthy working, learning and living environments for students, faculty and staff.

 

Vision: Vibrant People in a Caring Community

 

Priorities: Of the seventeen objectives in the HUSP, mental health emerged from the community consultations as the overarching priority.

 

Human Resource Services, the Office of the Dean of Students and The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation are collaborating on a number of initiatives related to this priority.

  • Sexual Violence Prevention Implementation. This is a partnership between HR and DoS to establish priorities and lead the planning and implementation of action plans required to achieve and build on the work previously accomplished by the Sexual Assault Response Implementation Report Committee.
  • Suicide Prevention. This is a partnership between HR and DoS to incorporate staff and faculty into the 2016 U of A suicide prevention framework and implement the recommendations outlined in the framework to better-coordinate campus prevention, intervention and postvention efforts. 
  • Developing and Implementing an Integrated Mental Health Awareness Campaign to optimize the use of resources as well as the impact of messaging and program offerings.
  • Promotion of Nutrition, Fitness and Social Health. A considerable body of research provides evidence of the positive impact of nutrition, fitness and social relationships on mental health and overall optimal health and wellbeing.   
  • Campus-wide Collaborations - Identification, promotion and recognition of ideas, individuals or groups for health and wellbeing i.e. Wellness Champions and Heroes for Health.
  • Developing an integrated web-based calendar of events and programs as a ‘one-stop’ location for faculty, staff and students to access. 
  • Adopting the ‘Vital U’ brand for all collaborative strategies, events, and programs.
  • In addition to collaborative initiatives, each of the partners will continue to implement other mental health initiatives that are unique to their constituent.
