Purpose and Intended Audience

Leading in the Academy is one of the University of Alberta's leadership programs for all academic leaders. It is designed to support new and recently appointed APOs, Department Chairs, Associate Deans, Associate Chairs, Management and Professional Staff and other Chair-like staff to be effective in their role as administrators and academic leaders.

Prior to 2013, APO School offered programming exclusively for APOs,designed to hone leadership skills and provide opportunities to network with peers in all areas across campus. An almost identical program, called Chair's School was offered to Department Chairs and similar Faculty-based leadership roles. Based on feedback from participants, and through a desire to reduce redundancy in programming, the two programs have been combined to allow for a broader audience and opportunities to learn from each other and resultant time and cost savings.

Program Snapshot

This program is tailored to the U of A environment and offers participants the opportunity to develop capabilities needed for effective leadership today and in the future within a complex higher education environment. A distinctive feature of the program is that the content is developed and presented by current and former Vice-Presidents, Deans, Senior Department Chairs, and other University APOs. Leading in the Academy is delivered through a two-series of learning opportunities, each suited to particular leadership needs/challenges. Each Series has its own descriptions of what to expect on the following pages:

  • Academic Management Series: for new Academic Leaders (Quick-Start Orientation (1 - 2 days in early October) + one full day and three 1/2 day workshops from October - April). If you are a new or nearly-new APO, or other new academic leader, this program is for you.
  • Leadership Series: skill development for more experienced leaders.

Leading in the Academy is sponsored in part by Office of the Provost in partnership with Chairs' Council Executive, APO Committee, and Human Resource Services - Organizational Development, Equity and Health.

Why Get Involved?
